Spring is just around the corner! In the Pacific Northwest, late February to early March is the right time to start planting early-season veggies like peas, so it’s not too early to start thinking about what you want to plant this year and where you will get your seeds.
The Seed Library can help, and you can help the Seed Library too! We’ll be holding our annual Spring Seed Swap / stock-the-library event at the Northeast Portland Tool Library on Saturday, March 2nd from 10 AM - 1PM. Stop by, meet some fellow PDX gardeners, and pick up some free seeds to take home for your garden. If you have some extra seeds of your own to share, bring them in to donate! Your donated seeds help keep the library stocked through the gardening season. Last year, we received over 50 new varieties of seeds to share with the community!

It’s that time of year again! Spring will be here before you know it. Have you started thinking about what to plant in your garden this year?

First of all, a quick thanks to everyone who made the Seed Swap event last month a success. We had a good turnout and received a lot of great donations to help stock the library for the coming year.
Special thanks to the folks who came up from the SE Portland Tool Library to help hold down the fort. They headed home with a large supply of new seeds (carrots, chinese cabbage, radishes, broccoli and many others) that we hope folks in SE will take advantage of.
In more recent news: NE Portland Tool Library tool master Tom Thompson stopped by Growing Gardens last week, and they were kind enough to donate 3 very large bags of pole beans for the library. It’s not quite bean-planting time yet, but beans were one of the things that were on our wish list because the library was a little light in the legume area. Well, we have tons of beans now, so come get some! (Thanks, Tom!)
A few other things that are still on our wish list:
- Alliums (Onions, Leeks)
- Peas
- Summer Squash
If you have an excess of any of those, bring ‘em in! Thanks, and happy gardening!
